In the beginning, peasants and slaves used to slowly drip a combination of whale oil and kerosine into the intake of their masters’ internal combustion engines. As slavery was banished and the cost of forced labor increased, Hendrik Carburetor came up with the brilliant idea that the internal combustion engine was in itself nothing but an air pump. As such, one could effectively use the sucking mechanism in the same fashion as straws to pull whale oil and kerosine into the internal combustion engine.

This technique continued for over a century, with a combination of science, black magic, and witchcraft continuing the evolution. For years, mechanics struggled with the proper size of straws, dealing with problems such as the outer cylinders running leaner than the inner cylinders due to a lack of fuel atomization and a variance in the distance between the carburetor and each respective cylinder. Motorcycles and race cars solved these problems by requiring one carburetor per cylinder, which added additional complexity in keeping the carburetors synchronized.

Fortunately, modern science has simplified the process, allowing for a computer to simply monitor the amount of air flow the engine is receiving, the RPM of the motor, and the amount of throttle being applied, and based on these factors, calculate an ideal amount of fuel to deliver. Additional fine tuning can be accomplished by measuring the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust, the intake ambient temperature, and the coolant temperature. From this, the computer can either look up in a fixed matrix the amount of fuel to apply or dynamically calculate an ideal value. Once that is determined, the computer can send a pulse width modulated signal to activate a fuel injector, which is effectively a relay that actuates on a pressurized fuel line connecting the fuel tank to the respective cylinder. Since such systems rely on fixed sensors which can easily be tested to ensure their integrity versus black magic and plug chops, reliability and fuel efficiency are drastically increased.

Such mechanisms are especially beneficial in the cases of forced induction, in which carburetion fails in one of two ways. The first failure comes from fuel being pumped into heated, compressed oxygen outside of the cylinders - a fairly unsafe combination. The second failure comes from the pressure outside of the carburetor exceeding the vacuum the engine provides, effectively defeating the “straw” approach that carburetors rely on.

So in conclusion, the cost of setting up a proper fuel injection system is inconsequential when compared to the alternative of training and then paying peasants to properly drip a sufficient but not liberal amount of whale oil and/or kerosine.

We still went backwards when gasoline direct injection found itself to have a potential problem - and it still relied on human labor.

Turns out continually spraying atomized solvent into your induction system can keep the valves and all the rest of the business pretty clean. Who knew?

Having spent a lot of time tuning carburetors, and a lot of time tuning fuel injection systems including a very early Speed Pro system where all of the parameters have been custom done for a motor that never even heard of fuel injection, I fully approve of this post!

Yes, I also believe black magic is less efficient. Last time I tried that I was cursed by a dark wizard
